HOME HEATING assistance for low income households

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Households may receive assistance in payment of their fuel bills to ensure continuation of service or restore utility services that have been shut off. Assistance is based on household income, household size, type of fuel, type of housing, and several other factors. Emergency crisis intervention is also available to repair or replace heating systems, provide emergency fuel delivery, or purchase air conditioners and fans.

The elderly (60 and older) and/or disabled may apply at local Outreach Centers between Oct. 1 to April 30 of each year. All other households may apply Nov. 1 to April 30.

When applying bring along the following items:

*Wage earners-copies of check stubs for the 3-month period preceding date of application or a copy of your federal income tax return;

*Fixed income-copies of most recent three months\' check stubs from programs such as Social Security Benefit, Supplemental Security Income, Family Investment Program, Veteran\'s Assistance, Unemployment Insurance, or pensions;

*Self-Employed/Farmers-a copy of your most recent federal income tax return;

*FIP and SSI recipients-your Medicaid number is on your Medicaid card. The numbers needed are immediately following your name and number in the aid type box; and

*Alimony or child support-income will need to be verified.

Aquila Cares, Hometown Cares, I Care, and Project Share Customers of area utilities contribute to these programs to provide energy assistance to qualified low-income households. Contact your local Outreach Center to see if your utility participates in your county.
